I had some fun at the thrift store. Christmas items were 50% off for one day. I found great trees and this little windup doll that rotates on a wooden base. Her musicbox plays "jingle bells." She was a bargain. Her condition is almost mint.

A little do it yourself project

Leah is modeling some vintage H Bar C wool western pants. I've had them for years. Green for the season. You can get a glimpse of my Halloween display, sorry I didn't photograph it. However you can see why I didn't. The wall arrangement wasn't pleasing to my eye.

I really wanted to use the old beehive boxes that I had gotten years ago from my friend Irene. A symmetrical arrangement was what I had in mind this time, even though the boxes are not the same size. Hanging them even at the top did the trick.

Poor Leah, she got roped into helping me, but I couldn't have done it without her!

I devised a clever way of keeping the plaster dust off of the floor and things below while drilling, cut a paper plate in half! It worked well. Of course you have to be careful not to tip it over.

Ok I think it looks better, now to decorate for the season. (this is the fun part!!)

Pete the Pup was rescued in pieces and strung back together.

I love the red books. They make a great backdrop.

I have already changed this arrangement to make it even more Christmassy and it still could use more bling. I'll post an update. I want to remove the faux lavender flowers from the top. I wish I had my little white trees, but I don't think any of my trees made the move with us. This could be a good excuse to go thrifting for replacements.

I have had this forever young lass for many years. It's strange, we've been together several decades. She has cheerfully made the move to Michigan and back to the land of Lincoln again, and from town to country. Now that she is a city girl again I am making her feel at home by surrounding her with luscious pots of flowers. She and I love the simple things, flowers, birds, and the sound of water. Are you in love with a concrete thing?

Here's what I finally had time to do, refurbish or UN-furbish a clock case that used to hold treasures in my former studio. Alas the studio is no more, so I yanked out the clumsy plywood shelves the previous owner saw fit to install. First I carefully removed the gilded window pane door. Then I yanked and pulled out the nails holding the old shelves. I wiggled and cajoled one shelf to align perfectly with the door frame, and tacked it in. The hardest part was drilling the walls and anchoring 3 L brackets. I did it! With my own two little hands. Then screwed it to the wall, then rehung the precious door, and tacked up the muslin fabric to protect my dolly's antique damask dress. It was worth the effort, although she does seem a little out of place in my homespun living room.

Nancy a doll

I've had this tiny doll for many years. In fact she was one of the first antique dolls I acquired, from a dealer named Nancy. She was a general line dealer, but her booths were always stuffed to the brim with folk art, quilts and toys. And of course a few dollies.

So it is with great pleasure I show off Nancy's new dress. It took a long long time to find her proper attire worthy of her demure nature, but here it is, and it's perfect!

She looks quite pleased. After a few stitches to her petticoat, she was ready for her woolen dress. Lovely.

I was encouraged to go to the UFDC show by my dolly pal Alicia. I am so glad I did. I lost my camera during my recent move and had to make do with my aging cell phone. Sadly, many images I thought I captured were lost. Here are a few that made it.

The doll was a new purchase and her proud owner graciously allowed me to post the photos I took of her treasure.

Desperate times and desperate sellers!

This is the japanese parian, and the seller agreed to post my suggestion that is is a reproduction.

sorry, this picture was protected by ebay and this is the best I could do! This doll and the one below are both japanese reproductions. The blond has horrible amateurish painting and the blush is running wildly.

Lately there has been a rash of repro china dolls, made and sold as repro china dolls in the 60's and 70's being sold now as genuine CIVIL WAR ERA antiques. Here are a few on eBay now that are just plain hideously ugly.

When notified the honest ones post the truth, and the dishonest start saying bull-O-ney about how rare their doll is. They havent got a CLUE as to what they have, and if they do, then shame on them!!

These folks need to buy this book, or anyone who needs to know what is a real china.

This black haired china below is a genuine and all original German antique:

This doll above, in the private collection of a friend who is a serious and studious collector, has her original body, and is a very likely doll the Japanese were copying. She is circa 1860-70. Notice the similar hair style. But look at the differences in how the lips and eyes are painted. The Japanese dolls (shown above these 2 dolls and below) have huge thick lips. There seems to be some dolls that were owned by collectors in the 1970's that claimed to have owned these dolls in the 1930's, as there is a record from a doll collecting club. However, other club members at that time stated the dolls were from the 1960's. I myself recall when these dolls were sold by Sears or Montgomery wards catalogs.
Now look at this doll, on ebay, sold as a head only:

Sharon, another astute collector says: those red corner eye dots look too large. None of my dolls have such large corner eye dots. And look my friends, Sharon is right, they are overdone.

Edyth O'Neill, longtime dealer and collector and author says:
"This doll is absolutely Japanese, 20 th century. There was a blond one too. It comes in parian as well as china. That is to say unglazed and glazed, black hair and blond. There was at one time an article on ebay about china dolls showing this one and the other smaller common one wih the pierced ears, that also comes in all 4 finishes. I learned to identify them way back in the mid 1950's, so they predate that time. I hate to see would be new collectors decieved and turned off the hobby. "Edyth
And further, fellow collector Lee, who only collects china head dolls reports:
"Pam, the title is Heart's of Ohio Doll Club presents China Heads, compiled by Martha Cramer. It was published in 1971.
On pg.77 are shown two china heads, one blonde, one black-haired. They are very similar to the dolls being discussed. The caption: "these heads, too, we think are Japanese. We know that dolls of this size and hair s-t-y-l-e were being made quite recently in Japan. They were sold in the 1960's. The painting does not look old. However, the owner says she has had one of these heads since 1934." Lee
Update 01-16-10
A doll correctly identified on Ruby Lane, this doll is obviously from the same mold as the above blonde but this one has poorer painting, and is most likely a 70's version of the doll. Sellers often remove the body since it is more obvious as a reproduction. I want to contact this seller since she is honest, and find out if she has a document containing information to identify these dolls.

Green Gill Mushroom. NO GOOD TO EAT!

I found a lovely group of mushrooms by the side of the road next to a corn field. Alas, it is the nasty Green Gill, and it is not edible. It's so pretty but don't let that fool you. We thought it was a Shaggy Parasol, which is edible. But the spore print was green, the sure sign of a toxic Green Gill. I have had no time to hunt and clean the house, my first term paper is due next week and it is to be written in French. This weekend will be consumed with that, helas!!! (alas)

I don't shy away from a damsel in distress. Wearing her tatters she is a wee delight. Some would prefer her to be perfect, but we all have our flaws. Like the velveteen rabbit, this is what makes her real to me. Her life was not easy. Like the pioneer girl in whose pocket she tarried, she was a traveler. The stains of play decorate her child made garment, proving this: Her destiny was fulfilled. She was dropped, but loved, and thus picked up again, rescued, saved. And now she is mine.

New Work!

Here is my newest work, a "door hanger" or dolly pocket. The dolly has a calico civil war repro print, and she has a kettle cloth pocket. The "WELCOME" sign is printed on an old religious newspaper.

It measures 8 by 6 not including the pocket, and the penny doll has jointed arms, and is 4.45" tall. Email me to purchase! OOPs, this one is SOLD, email me for orders.

I wish you could smell these! Its smells like heaven.

A winter evening

The door of my studio to the wrap around porch has been decorated with etched glass that ressembles battenburg lace. It's so pretty at night.

This gold leaf transfer on the door of the clock case is one of my favorite things, and was a lucky ebay find, several years ago. It came fitted with shelves, so I have tucked tiny treasures inside. But I really want to remove and reconfigure the shelves so that the top space showcases a single very special dolly.

Can you guess what I am making here?

More penny woodens are on the way. I'm tinkering and carving, beading and stitching. The painting and aging are done.
